THE DALLES — River McClure is taking his record-setting prowess to another level.
The Dalles High senior broke the school’s all-time mark in the 300-meter hurdles on April 12 at a meet in Sherwood. He improved on that time at the Dean Nice Invitational on May 9 in Gresham, where he nearly broke the all-time Oregon Class 4A record in the event.
McClure won the race in a state-leading (all classifications) 37.89 seconds, closing in on the all-time 4A mark of 37.38 set last season by Baker City High’s Rasean Jones. If things progress as planned, those two will face each other May 30 and 31 in the OSAA 4A state championships at historic Hayward Field in Eugene.
McClure wasn’t the only Riverhawk who either added their name to – or repositioned themselves on – the school’s all-time list. Derek Goulart cleared a personal best 6 feet, 6 inches to win the boys high jump. The leap is one inch below the school’s all-time best set by Cody Stelzer in 2006.
McClure, Goulart, David McCracken, and Julian Morehouse combined to run the 4x100 meter relay in 43.21, which is the No. 4 time in The Dalles history (and the No. 4 time in the 4A ranks through May 9).
Morehouse tied his all-time best of 14-6 in the pole vault and finished second. McCracken ran the 100 in 11.39 (11.04 prelim) and the 200 in 22.77 (PR).
The Riverhawks’ distance medley relay of Trey Hodges, McClure, Noah Preston, and Tyson Long was third in 11:10.73, which ranks No. 3 in school history.
Patrick Rankin had a two-PR day, running 24.18 seconds in the boys 200 and 53.71 in the 400. In field events, London Leitz bounded a PR in the triple jump of 38-5.25; Anthony Santana leapt a PR 20-0.75 in the long jump; and Shea Anderson cleared a PR 6-0 in the high jump.
The Dalles’ girls were led by the distance medley relay of Kestley Hodges, Laura Black, Abigail Pope, and Alaina Casady. They ran 13:58.58 – the No. 2 time in school history. Freshman Marie-Louise McCracken ran a PR 27.73 in the 200 and the 100 in 13.37. Josie Brace ran a tough double – 1:08.22 400 and 56.13 300 hurdles. She also joined Laura Black, Ebany Mondragon and Gabrielle Kahler on the 4x400 relay which ran 4:21.39.
The Dalles competes in the Tri-Valley junior varsity meet May 14 in Molalla; the Tri-Valley district meet is May 21-22 at Crook County High School in Prineville.
