A record 29 golfers turned out for the Hood River Valley boys golf team this spring, giving Coach Erin Mason a lot of options — albeit many of them unknown at this point — heading into the 2024 season.
Spring is a relative term with wintery weather lingering, but the Eagles will test their shot-making skills soon enough — in their own invitational tourney March 11 at Indian Creek Golf Course.
Mason said the Eagles’ top two lineup spots will be taken by Davis Kerr and John Olsen. Kerr is a two-time Class 5A state tourney competitor, having finished 51st as a freshman and 37th last season.
“He is looking to climb up the ladder this postseason,” said Mason. “John missed the state qualifier cut, but only by a couple of strokes — this was hard for John to swallow.”
Olson did what he could on the course in league qualifying events, but because HRV’s 2023 spring break was not aligned with the rest of the state, the Eagles had one less chance to qualify vs. other schools.
“John has been grinding ever since and plans on making his presence known this year,” said Mason. “I expect the duo of Kerr and Olsen to be very productive this season for HRV.”
The record turnout for Hood River Valley adds some competitiveness to the Eagle practice sessions. “As a team, we are still working on our No. 3, 4 and 5 spots — as we lack depth,” Mason said. “This has been an Achilles heel since finishing fourth at a non-official state championship as a team in 2021 and losing players to graduation.”
HRV last went to the OSAA-sanctioned state tournament as a team in 2019, when the Eagles were seventh. “I have some great prospects and am working those players to get them tournament ready,” said Mason.
