HOOD RIVER — The 18th annual Kiteboarding 4 Cancer (KB4C) fundraiser took over the Hood River event site July 5-7, organized by Project Koru and event director Rachel Callahan and nine-time champion Grom Gormley.
Last year, Gormley says, the event raised more than $200,000 for cancer survivors and it is the largest fundraiser for Project Koru.
“So in the beginning of Kiteboard 4 Cancer, we were donating money to the either the John Wayne’s Cancer Foundation, or a few others. But we weren’t feeling like we were touching people’s lives in a way that we really want to,” Gormley said. He estimates they changed course and started raising funds for wellness camps and other Project Koru programs. Campers have been to Costa Rica, Maui and even Mount Hood for snowboarding and skiing retreats.
“It takes people that have been struggling with doctors and lab coats and instead takes them and lets them focus on water and healing and putting your mind and recreation in like a meaningful way,” Gormley said.
This year, events included a one-mile swim, team derby and other wind sport events. Title sponsor for the event was Doug’s Sporting Goods and Full Sail, who Gormley says is the only sponsor to be included all 18 years. Gormley’s right-hand man Luke Gandy was helping with emcee duties.
“The energy is great. The stoke is high. It’s an awesome weekend,” Gandy said.
