HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley girls tennis (7-2 overall) extended their match winning streak to five on Thursday, April 17 with an 8-0 sweep of Milwaukie High.
The Eagles were running hot returning from a successful 4-0 match success at the Caldera Tournament in Bend this past weekend. The highlight of that weekend was topping Class 6A Sunset High School 6-2.
“The girls definitely raised their level of play to meet the challenge of playing Sunset. Sophomore Zoe Aiken played an exceptionally tough match and through grit and patience earned the win 6-4, 7-5,” said Coach Peg Bogard. “The top 6 players on the squad could easily share the No. 1 ladder spot on any given day. They have put in the time out of season to improve their skills and play smart tennis and that is leading to consistent wins now.”
With 14 players returning to varsity this year, the team is winning all the way through to the No. 4 singles and No. 4 doubles placements in the lineup as shown in by wins over The Dalles (8-0), Central (8-0), Mountain View (7-1), Cascade (7-1) and this week’s matchup with Milwaukie (8-0).
HRV lost to 6A Grant 4-4, which was decided by the margin of one game. “There is a lot of pressure to play in those spots, but players are rewarded with competitive games that are the most difficult to come out on top. A successful program wins down the line with players in the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 positions who look for the strategic plays, play patiently and stick to the basics,” Bogard said.
The HRV team continues conference play next week with Parkrose and Rex Putnam High Schools.
