THE DALLES — On Thursday, April 10, a rivalry was renewed when the Hood River Valley softball team (8-2 overall) traveled to 16th Street Ballpark in The Dalles for a matchup with Class 4A The Dalles Riverhawks, who are struggling to replicate last year’s success.
The Riverhawks, coached by first-year head coach Duane Witter, had lost seven games in a row since their opening season 20-5 win over North Marion on March 17.
The Eagles, coached by Madelynn Vallejo, had won six of their past seven and have been ranked in the top five of the OSAA’s Class 5A rankings for three straight weeks.
On April 10, the Eagles donned their dark blue jerseys and the Riverhawks wore their classic pinstripe uniforms. The Dalles starting pitcher, junior Siyra Faulkner, was put on her heels in the top of the first inning when HRV freshman Honey Wampler-Bryan singled on a bunt and set up senior Grace Rowan for another highlight play. Rowan doubled on a line drive that allowed Wampler-Bryan to score. HRV would score later inning when Rowan raced home on a Riverhawk error.
The Dalles senior Maddie Brock doubled in the first and was caught trying to score off a ground ball from Candence Young. Faulker and the Riverhawks would retire the next three HRV batters, and Rowan would do the same as HRV entered the third inning ahead, 2-0.
Third time was the charm for Rowan, as she followed two pop outs from Kenadie Lucas and Wampler-Bryan, with her fourth home run of the season, extending HRV’s lead, 3-0.
The Dalles would finally get on the scoreboard on a one-run home run by sophomore Morgan Donivan to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. The 3-1 score would remain for the fifth inning, until HRV sophomore Addison Van Metre would score on a single from Lucas and senior Sarah Mason would be driven home on a double from Rowan.
The Riverhawks entered the sixth inning needing offense and Brock responded. Donivan earned a walk and subsequently advanced to second on an HRV error. Brock battled to a full 3-2 count and then smashed a home run to left field, bringing the Riverhawks’ bench back to life.
The Eagles would eventually escape 16th Street Ballpark with a 5-3 win and send the Riverhawks back to the drawing board.
The Dalles would play again on April 11 but lose to Astoria, 2-1 — their third one-run loss in a week. The Dalles opened Tri-Valley Conference play this week with two games against Crook County (5-4 overall) on April 14 (away) and April 16 (home). The Riverhawks host Madras on April 17 — all games begin at 4:30, weather depending.
Hood River opens Northwest Oregon Conference play with three games — against Parkrose on April 15 (away, 4 p.m.) and April 16 (home, 4:30 p.m.) and a home game against Putnam on April 18 at 5:30 p.m.
