Hood River Valley bounced back from 1-0, season-opening loss to visiting Lincoln High with a 4-2 win on Sept. 3 over Class 6A Mountainside in a nonleague boys soccer game in Beaverton.
The Eagles came back from a 2-0 second-half deficit, playing a player down in the second half. HRV senior forward Aran Garcia was ejected from the game late in the first half following a double caution penalty.
“We had to make some tactical adjustments in the second half while playing down one man and trailing,” said second-year Coach Al Lara. “The changes we made helped keep us in an attacking offensive scheme that really paid off due to the fearless mentality that our boys have against any opponent. The boys just maintained their offensive pressure to help us get an aggressive comeback victory. Oscar Moline really gave us a good boost to help get the comeback started.”
The win was fueled by senior midfielder Julian Lara, who scored three goals in a 13-minute time span of the second half. The comeback began when Moline scored on a free kick, making it 2-1. Lara booted in a goal off an assist by junior midfielder Solomon Parson in the 65th minute, knotting it 2-2.
Lara, who is Coach Al Lara’s nephew, followed with his second goal off an assist by senior Andro Mendez (two assists) to give HRV a 3-2 lead. In the 78th minute, Lara and Mendez combined on another scoring play to make the score final.
HRV goalkeepers Eamon Anslinger (first half) and Emmy Galindo (second half) combined for the win in goal. HRV had 15 shots on goal vs. Mountainside’s defense.
