The Hood River Valley girls tennis team, this spring’s Northwest Oregon Conference girls tennis dual match runner-up, is competing this week in the district tournament at Parkrose High in Portland.
The Eagles were scheduled to play the first rounds of singles and doubles on May 13, with the semifinals and finals on May 14. The NWOC boys tourney is May 14-15, also at Parkrose.
The Eagle girls ended the 2024 dual match season with three straight wins: 7-1 vs. Wilsonville; 6-2 over Canby; and 6-2 vs. Hillsboro. Heading into district play, the team is in second place behind LaSalle Prep, the only conference team that HRV lost to during the season (by a 5-3 score).
Juniors Jena Hager and Kendall Sales have been seated No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, in the district singles bracket. Hager has an 8-1 record this season, and Sales is 6-2.
“They go into the tournament with a strong grasp of strategy and impressive ground strokes,” Coach Peg Bogard said.
Senior Erandy Galindo and junior Sylvia Moores, both 6-4 for the season, have been seated No. 6 at districts in doubles.
“Communication and poaching will be the key to their success at the tournament,” Bogard said.
“This HRV team is well respected for their skill and competitiveness, but more for their integrity and comradery with their opponents,” the coach added. “Our players maintain composure, have a deep knowledge of the rules, and great attitudes win or lose.”
The top four finishers in girls and boys singles and doubles at district qualify for the May 24-25 Class 5A state tournament. Play on the first day at state will be held at the West Hills Racquet and Fitness Center, and the second day at the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District facility in Beaverton.
