WHITE SALMON — Columbia High’s girls cross country team, runner-up in the District IV 1A championships, finished eighth at the 2024 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) state meet on Nov. 9.
Columbia, with four runners either setting or tying their personal records, scored 201 team points in the 1A meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. The Bruin boys, third at district, finished 15th at state with 365 points.
Columbia’s top finisher at state was freshman Kathryn O’Connor who was 19th overall in a personal best by 11 seconds at 20 minutes, five seconds. O’Connor improved her 5,000-meter time this season by two minutes, 22 seconds. Running No. 2 at state for the Bruin girls team was senior Helen Hoskins, who had a six-second PR of 20:37 at state to finish 33rd overall out of 154 1A finishers. Sophomore teammate Lilah Zimmerman was four seconds behind her teammate and finished 36th. Zimmerman was coming off successive fourth-place district meet finishes for Columbia.
Completing the team score (top five runners) for the Bruins at state were sophomore Maya Tama, who was 97th overall in 22:34, and junior Maisy Kollman, who was 100th in 22:42 (which tied her personal best). Columbia freshman Heidi Hoppus was six seconds behind Kollman in 101st, and senior Damarys Alvarez was 123rd in 23:34 — a 13-second PR.
A testament to Coach Michael Hannigan’s Bruin team mentality was the fact that its pack from runners No. 1 through 5 was two minutes, 37 seconds — the third best of any 1A girls squad. The Columbia boys recorded three personal bests at state and were led by senior Noah Slayton, who finished 30th overall in 16:47. Slayton, who finished 60th at state as a sophomore, dropped his personal best by 10 seconds from the 16:57 clocking he registered with his sixth-place finish at district. Slayton improved his time in the 5,000 this season by nearly a minute.
The Columbia boys also had personal record races from Ethan Hayes, who was 140th in 19:35, and Milo Hoppus, who was 144th in 19:38. Hayes was part of Columbia’s team score along with Slayton, senior Cole Wooding, who was 107th in 18:13, Luther Thomas (114th, 18:30), and Jack Brooks (134th, 19:06). Colby Clark also competed at state for the Bruins, finishing 151st in 20:15.
Cedar Park Christian won the 1A girls and boys races, while District 4 champion Montesano, led by individual champ Haley Schweppe (18:44), was third in the girls meet. Will Carroll of Annie Wright won the boys individual title in 15:28.
