WHITE SALMON — The Columbia High Bruins have clinched a WIAA Class 1A Trico League girls basketball District 4 playoff berth after getting a split of two games last week.
The Bruins (8-4 league, 11-6 overall) won 61-16 over the Fort Vancouver High Trappers (0-12 league, 1-17 overall) Jan. 30 in Vancouver. The victory solidified the Bruins third-place position in the eight team league standings and the top four qualify for the playoffs.
The Bruins took control of the contest early as they outscored the Trappers 29-3 in the first quarter. The lopsided win by 45 points represented the Bruins largest margin of victory this year and the 16 points allowed was also a season low for an opponent.
The Bruins were led by junior Halle Koch, who scored a career-high 32 points, along with seven rebounds and seven steals. Junior Sara Miller had 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
On Jan. 27, the Bruins faced the league leading, No. 9-ranked Seton Catholic High Cougars (12-0 league, 13-5 overall) and they suffered their most lopsided defeat of the year in a 58-21 loss at home. The Bruins, guided by Coach Justin Frazier, recorded a season low in total points scored. Seton hasn’t lost a league game in three years.
Coach Justin Frazier said: “The score doesn’t indicate how hard we actually played.”
Miller led the Bruins in scoring with 11 points and rebounding with seven.
The Bruins conclude the regular season with a 7 p.m. Senior Night game Thursday versus the Stevenson High Bulldogs (4-8 league, 5-13 overall) at Columbia High in White Salmon.
The Bruins have qualified for district for the first time in two years. They’ll play a first-round road game in the eight-team, double-elimination event on Feb. 12.
