THE GORGE — The defending Class 1A Big Sky League champion Dufur High Rangers (5-1 league, 10-4 overall) lost their first league game, 43-34 to the Sherman High Huskies Jan. 18 in Moro.
With the win, the Huskies (6-0 league, 10-4 overall) moved atop the 10-team league standings with six games remaining on the regular season conference schedule.
It marked the seventh straight win for the Huskies, who have won eight of their past nine games. On Jan. 14, the Huskies notched their sixth straight, 65-39, over the Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler High Falcons at Mitchell High School. The Huskies scored a season high point total in the win.
The Huskies were seeking their to extend their win streak in a Jan. 21 contest versus the South Wasco County High Redsides (6-1 league, 14-3 overall) in Maupin. The Redsides extended their win streak to four in a Jan. 18, 62-46, nonleague road win over the Pilot Rock High Rockets (9-5). On Jan. 17, the Redsides scored a season-high point total in an 80-63 road win over the Ione/Arlington High Cardinals (1-3 league, 5-10 overall) at Arlington High School.
Prior to the loss, the Rangers extended their win streak to six straight with a 59-47 win over the Horizon Christian High Hawks (3-4 league, 4-8 overall) Jan. 14 in Hood River. Tyler Abbott scored 18 points and Ben Chapman had 11 to lead the Hawks. Dufur was led by Jacob Kent (14 points) and Nolan Cates (12 points).
The Hawks split two league games last week as they won, 66-42, Jan. 17 at home over Wheeler County. Chapman had 27 to lead Horizon, who had four in double figure scoring including Joseph Dutton with 16, Abbott with 11 and Milo Bielen with 10. Senior Levin Whitbeck led Wheeler with 21 points.
The Hawks were seeking to get a win in a Jan. 21 nonleague home matchup versus the C.S. Lewis Academy Watchmen (4-9). The Hawks host Ione/Arlington on Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m.
The Lyle/Wishram High Cougars (1-4 league, 4-9 overall) won their first league game, 49-40, at home over Ione/Arlington on Jan. 18, snapping a six-game losing streak.
