And every time I think I’m running out of material, I find another trove!” A taco bar dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m. Dinner and program are $14; the program only is $5. ‘Oregon Stories’ in HR April 1
The 12-piece Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble announces its most ambitious project ever: a musical triptych that tells the stories of three Oregonians who triumphed over racial and gender discrimination to achieve inspiring, notable success. “Oregon Stories” features original compositions by famed film composer and guitarist Mark Orton, celebrated pianist and professor of music at Portland State University Darrell Grant, and PJCE Executive Director Douglas Detrick, an award-winning composer and trumpeter. KMHD-FM host Jessica Rand produced the audio interviews which comprise the foundation for this musical chronicle of living history. Radio broadcast of a studio recording is scheduled for late 2016, when the “Oregon Stories” album is released.
The Hood River show is April 1 at the Columbia Center for the Arts. The story of George Akiyama, who was threatened with violence — and a fellow citizen who stepped forward to support him — when he came home from serving in World War II, will be told by historian Linda Tamura. $15 general admission, $12 PJCE members, $5 Seniors and Students with ID. Tickets at pjce.org.
