The Columbia Center for the Arts is planning an invitational art show entitled "Instrumental," which will be inspired by the beauty of handmade musical instruments. The show is being curated by Sarah Burr Arnold, and is planned for March 2016.
"We hope to exhibit instruments created by any and all instrument makers working in the Columbia River Gorge area. In addition we will have artists working with each instrument maker to translate the process, the music, the result into art," Arnold said.
Instrument makers would need to be willing to allow an artist to observe the creative process and/or listen to the instruments as they are played so they could create visual art based on what they see and hear.
In addition to the show, music performances and other special events are being planned for the Art Center theater during the month of the show.
Local musician Jim Drake came up with the idea for the show.
"The Gorge has always had a unique music culture, and combining instrument makers and artists into a show seems like a natural fit. I want the show to demonstrate how the process of making a musical instrument can be translated into art that can be seen and heard," Drake said.
