THE GORGE — Hundreds of high school athletes opened practices this week, when the official start of the fall sports season began.
The first day of practice for high schools in Oregon was Aug. 19, as athletes prepare for their first competitions, set to begin within the next two weeks. Washington high school sports practices begin Aug. 21 for football and Aug. 26 for volleyball, cross country and soccer.
Many athletes from Columbia, Hood River Valley and The Dalles high schools — along with other smaller schools in the Gorge — have been working out this summer in preparation for interscholastic competition in Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) and Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) leagues.Â
A handful of coaching changes took place since the 2023-24 season. The Dalles High has a first-year head football coach in former assistant Nate Timmons. He played high school football at The Dalles. Timmons, 32, was hired to replace Marc Schilling, who resigned after two years at the conclusion of the 2023 season. Lynn Helyer guided the Riverhawks for one season in 2021 prior to Schilling’s two-year tenure.
Hood River Valley’s cross country program is now headed by Laura Haspela, who takes over for long-time coach Brandon Bertram, who resigned last spring. Haspela teaches biology at HRV and for many years taught math and science at Hood River Middle School.
