HOOD RIVER — SafeSpace, 206 Wasco Loop, a non-profit and the Gorge’s only child advocacy center, will host an open house for its new facility on Wednesday, March 20 from 4-6 p.m.
Visitors will learn about the services of SafeSpace as they walk through the 8,400-square-foot facility. Staff and volunteers will lead tours approximately every 15 minutes. Light refreshments will be served.
“This building became a reality because community members, businesses and regional foundations united to create a larger, permanent center to support child victims of abuse,” said SafeSpace Executive Director Beatriz Lynch. “This is a special opportunity to see our new space and celebrate what we have accomplished together.”
The new SafeSpace expands and improves services for Columbia Gorge children and youth who are suspected victims of child abuse, neglect, and maltreatment. The larger space reduces wait times for child abuse assessments and doubles the organization’s service capacity from 160 to 320 cases per year. Additionally, SafeSpace is currently developing plans to open a new pediatric mental health clinic on the building’s second level to address a regional shortage of children’s mental health services addressing trauma, depression, substance abuse and ADHD.
The SafeSpace campaign is raising the final $100,000 to reach its $5 million goal. All contributions of $250 or more will be permanently recognized on the donor wall adjacent to the SafeSpace community room.
