Columbia High's boys jayvee basketball team won its second game in a row last Thursday, overcoming a 13-point first-quarter deficit to post a 52-43 victory at La Center.
Mark Lovrin scored 22 points to pace the Junior Bruins' offense and was a leader on the defensive end, said Jr. Bruins Coach Joe Bales.
"He brings an intensity to the jayvees that we sorely lacked last season," Bales said of Lovrin.
Dylan Rabinowitz added 11 points, Felix Torres and Caleb Huth tallied seven each, Neal LaGrander and Bruno Maya both had two and Chris Kennedy chipped in one.
Bales said poor defense allowed La Center to open a 20-7 lead in the first quarter. But that changed late in the first and carried over into the ensuing periods.
"Once we got tired of giving up layups, we picked up the defensive tempo, pulled ahead in the fourth and kept the lead the rest of the game," Bales said.
Down 24-18 at the half, the Junior Bruins (4-2) outscored La Center, 15-10, in the third quarter to get within one point, then won the game with a 19-9 finishing period.
