White Salmon Arts Council Artist of the Month is glass artist Monica Gelien.
Formerly a painter, she was drawn to glass fusion by its infinite possibilities. Texture, color, shape and the ability of glass to bend light attracted Gelien to this medium.
"I am drawn to the phenomenon of working with heat and its power in the transformation of glass. Also, there is something inviting about working in a warm studio...especially in the winter months."
Gelien's glasswork takes full advantage of the design details that are possible with this medium. Her opalescent and iridescent fused glass creations have included sports-related scenes including windsurfing and bicycles. Her jewelry line focuses on beautiful fused glass pendants in opaque and transparent jewel tones.
"Glass is amazingly versatile," said Gelien.
In addition to imaginative art objects, she also creates "useful items," as she calls them such as platters, vessels, and tabletops.
Some of her favorite creations are the wine tables complete with glass tops and wine storage underneath. A recent project was a collaboration with a homeowner that included windsurfing scenes created for cabinet door windows.
Most recently from Lake Oswego, Gelien relocated to Hood River a year and a half ago. She loves the inspiration that the Columbia River Gorge offers her.
Her work is available locally at the Frame Gallery in Hood River and in White Salmon at Glassworks and Sticks and Stones.
