Maryhill Museum and Walking Softly Adventures of Portland has organized an art and history excursion to Romania for two weeks in September, 2006.
The public is invited to join Museum members, staff and trustees to visit museums, palaces, castles and historic sites throughout the country.
Queen Marie of Romania visited the Columbia River Gorge region and dedicated Maryhill Museum in 1926.
"Romania is filled to the brim with old world charm," said Art Dodd, host and Maryhill Museum trustee. "We'll take time to savor its fabulous cuisine and visit places connected to Maryhill."
The trip includes visits to three diverse regions of Romania, including Transylvania/Wallachia with Saxon towns, fortified churches, castles, and monasteries and numerous sites where Queen Marie lived; Maramures characterized by wooden churches with tall steeples, music, and crafts that exemplify traditional Romanian culture; and Suceava/Bucovina renown for dramatic painted monasteries and an embroidery school established by Queen Marie.
"Maryhill Museum will present a major exhibition of Romanian folk arts and textiles next year," said Colleen Schafroth, executive director. "This trip will be a nice complement to the exhibit."
Dates for the trip are Sept. 17 through Oct. 2.
Cost is $3,400 per person which includes lodging, meals, guides, admission fees, medical insurance, and ground transportation. Participants are responsible for their own airfare arrangements.
Reservations are encouraged by Jan. 15.
