The scoreboard may have read a 77-6 loss to Hermiston, but The Dalles wrestling team showed a few bright spots in Thursday’s Columbia River Conference kickoff at Hermiston High School.
Aside from five forfeit losses, the Riverhawks had four matches go down to the wire with two third-round pinfall setbacks and a pair of decision losses by an average of 1.5 points.
At 220 pounds, No. 3-ranked Joe Linebarger hit the squared circle opposite Sam Colbray.
The Hermiston freshman jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first two rounds, and still was in control towards the end of the finale, until Linebarger landed a takedown to inch to within 3-2.
Unfortunately for the Riverhawk junior, he was unable to score the tying and winning points in the last few ticks of the clock.
At 152 pounds, Mitchell Waters hit the mats versus Jake Palmer in what turned out to be a six-minute slugfest.
Palmer led by two points entering the last round, and with time running out, Waters dropped Palmer on a takedown to creep to an 8-7 deficit.
Palmer tallied a point on an escape to make it 9-7, but as Waters tried to even the count with a takedown, the Hermiston underclassman held off any late rally.
Those two bouts were give-and-take, and both TD wrestlers Jeff Jimenez and Jacob Schacht stood tough with matches that lasted until the third round.
Jimenez wound up losing by a third-round pin to Hermiston’s Beau Blake, and Schacht suffered the same fate in his 170-pound match against Bulldog youngster Bob Coleman.
Hermiston also added three first-round pins, a technical fall to go with the five forfeits. At 106 pounds, the match was scored as a double forfeit, for The Dalles’ lone points.
The Riverhawks have three duals left on the schedule before regionals in Portland on Feb. 20-21, and the next time they dress down is on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Hood River Valley.
Once that is in the books, TD hosts Pendleton at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5 for senior night at Kurtz Gym.
