At Cook Park in Tigard, Ariana Gonzalez, Bryce Newby, Stella Lujan and Lilyana Gonzalez, from The Dalles United, signed on for girls’ soccer action in a co-op with Beaverton Westside at the Lake Oswego Nike Cup this weekend and advanced all the way to the title match, eventually losing on penalty kicks to Lake Oswego.
“This group was made up of players from three different teams and they played teams that have been together for a long time, so making it to the final was a great achievement,” head coach Oscar Nunez said. “That was the goal and we achieved our goal. We were very close to winning the final, had a couple of shots go off the post. Penalty kicks are a coin toss and it didn’t go our way this time.”
After Friday’s forfeit win over Woodburn, the Gonzalez twins notched a hat trick apiece and the defensive pairing of Newby and Lujan played lockdown defense to help Westside Beaverton to a 6-3 win.
With the 2-0 pool play record, Beaverton had a bye for its bracket opener on Saturday and didn’t hit the field until Sunday’s semifinal against Oregon City.
In that game, Ariana Gonzalez notched two goals and an assist and Lilyana Gonzalez chipped in with a goal and two assists in Beaverton’s 6-2 romp.
That big win put Beaverton in the title contest versus Lake Oswego in a repeat matchup.
Lake Oswego enjoyed the early edge in play with a 2-0 lead, but Beaverton stormed back to tie the game at 4-4 in the second half, but Lake Oswego chalked up its 12U crown on penalty kicks.
Ariana and Lilyana Gonzalez tallied two goals apiece, and Newby had an assist on a cross pass to Lilyana for her goal.
This tournament was a last-minute fill-in, because Westside Beaverton needed extra girls and a coach.
“It was great to exceed expectations, but second place is always hard for the girls, because you end the tournament on a loss,” Nunez said. “We were happy with the experience and lessons we take away from that tournament and I am looking forward to having my full team back this weekend.”
The Dalles United is slated to play this weekend at the Mount Hood Challenge.
