Ben Feil broke a 25-year old record and teammates Andy Clifford and Molly Nelson have their own records within reach after a solid afternoon for The Dalles High School Saturday for the annual White Buffalo Invitational Swim Meet in Madras.
Earlier in the season, Feil had been flirting with surpassing the 100-yard breastroke time previously set by Scott Roy, coming just a half-second short last week at the TD Invitational in Hood River.
The Riverhawk standout needed another week to drop his time to one minute and 6.06 seconds to etch his name in the record books.
While Feil broke down the record barrier, Clifford is knocking on the door after turning in his best-ever time in the 500-yard freestyle, as he shaved 13 seconds to 5:29.00.
He is less than four seconds off the all-time record.
Feil did not stop at one win on the day, as he stopped the watch in 52.95 for first place in the 100-yard freestyle.
Clifford added a time of 24.50 in the 50-yard freestyle for second place.
On the relay side, the 400-yard freestyle team of Clifford, Corey Cameron, Jordon McGuirk and Feil secured second place in a4:21.90, and the 200-yard freestyle group of Feil, Caleb Wild, McGuirk and Clifford carded third place with a final mark of 1:54.92.
McGuirk added a seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (1:14.45) and he reeled in eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (31.58).
Cameron had a time of 1:17.09 in the 100-yard freestyle and he was good for sixth in his 50-yard freestyle run setting his marks at 31.25.
TD head coach Scott McKay is very pleased with the current progression of his male quintuplets.
“We have only five male swimmers, but they keep dropping time,” the Riverhawk coach said. “Two of the team’s first-year swimmers, Jordon McGuirk and Caleb Wild, swam personal bests.”
Nelson, Annessa Clear, Allie Wood, Molly Daggett and Maya Hernandez kept up their paces to lead the girl’s side.
On the day, Nelson amassed two wins in her main events, nearly setting a personal-best in the 100-yard backstroke with a final time of 1:09.87.
In addition, Nelson notched top honors in her try at the 200-yard freestyle run where she touched the wall in 2:26.09.
Molly Daggett picked up second place in the 50-yard freestyle (26.58),
Added to those other solid times, Wood grabbed second place in her attempt at the 100-yard butterfly (1:11.54) and she was good for fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:17.94).
Hernandez motored home for a fourth-place marker of 2:50.07 in the 200-yard freestyle.
Hannah Weeks scored a 1:08.74 for her efforts at the 100-yard freestyle and Emily Peterson pushed forward with a 1:42.12 in the 100-yard breastroke.
The girl’s relays came up huge in Madras as well with two seconds and a third in three races.
In the 200-yard medley, the group of Nelson, Weeks, Wood and Daggett worked a split of 2:10.82 to tally second place, and this foursome matched wits again in the 200-yard freestyle relay for third place in 1:56.64.
Also making their names known in the relay ranks were Hannah Mazeski, Makenzie Haughton, Emily Noasco and senior Maddie Wood, for a time of 5:44.26 to take second place in the 400 free relay.
With all these times to their records, McKay is getting his group better prepared for the final month of training.
“For these last weeks, I am looking for best effort, more than best times, because we should be practicing hard and won’t be rested until we taper for districts,” coach McKay said.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, the Riverhawks are at the Hood River Invitational at the Aquatic Center and on Jan. 31, they wrap up the regular season with a meet in Baker City.
Districts begin on Saturday, Feb. 14.
“The next three weeks are the toughest part of the season to be prepared for districts,” the coach added. “I just hope there are no snow days to get in the way of training.”
