Colin Noonan and Johnny Miller went a combined 7 for 8 with four runs scored and an RBI and senior pitcher Colton Walker tossed three scoreless innings to lead The Dalles baseball team to an 8-4 win over 6A Glencoe Monday in a non-league contest played on Bob Williams Field in The Dalles.
TD came out on fire and rode a four-run top of the first inning and a four-run second to its first win of the season.
“It’s always nice to get the first ‘W’ out of the way,” Riverhawks head coach J.R. Runyon said. “Today, there were many positives that we took away from this game, as well as many things we can improve on. I’m happy with how our guys came out ready to play today. Tomorrow we work to get better.”
In the opening frame, Noonan and Miller led off with back-to-back singles, and Dawson Hoffman added a sacrifice bunt to move runners into scoring position.
Walker drove in two runs with a single, and then Kellen Mathisen reached on a walk and Boston Bate added a single to load the bases for Bailey Ortega.
On a 0-1 pitch, Ortega slammed a two-run single to score Walker and Mathisen to give TD a 4-0 lead.
Out in front 4-0 in the top of the second inning, Cash Mathewson, Noonan and Miller jumpstarted another rally with consecutive hits, Miller had an RBI double to put runners in scoring position for Hoffman.
Hoffman singled to bring in Noonan and Miller to increase the Hawk lead to 7-0.
Walker and Mathisen then posted one-out singles, and Walker capped the four-run outburst with a steal of home to make it an 8-0 cushion.
From the third inning on, the Riverhawks managed three hits and four walks, but stranded seven runners on base.
Walker lasted three innings, and struck out four Glencoe batters, walked one and gave up four hits to pick up the win.
William Justesen, Bate, Spencer Honald and Ortega finished the final four innings in relief, combining to allow five hits and four runs, three unearned.
Noonan finished 4 for 4 with two runs scored, Miller added three hits, two runs and an RBI, and Walker went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs to pace TD’s 14-hit barrage.
Hoffman had a hit and two RBIs, Mathisen scored a run, walked twice and had a hit, and Ortega had a hit and two RBIs in his two at-bats.
TD (1-0 overall record) hosts Reynolds at 4 p.m. Wednesday for a non-league matchup, and then hits the road to Bend for a doubleheader starting at Noon Saturday.
