Lane Turner went 3 for 3 with an RBI, and Bryson Caldwell scattered four hits and no earned runs with four strikeouts, as the No. 10-ranked Dufur Rangers posted a 12-1 mercy-ruled victory over Union Thursday at the Les Schwab Icebreaker Tournament in John Day.
Overall, every single starter except for the designated hitter had a hand in the 13 total hits, seven in the first two frames.
“We came out with the bats swinging. It was a good thing to see from these boys,” said head coach C.S. Little. “We were aggressive and we came out with a plan at the plate.”
Up by a 4-1 margin in the top of the second frame, Dufur dropped the hammer down on the Bobcats with four runs on three hits.
Caldwell started the rally with a walk, and Jake Kortge reached after being hit by a pitch.
Both runners advanced a base on a passed ball, setting the stage for Josh Keyser.
The senior rifled a two-run single to plate Caldwell and Kortge to make it, 6-1.
Nick Little chased home Keyser with an RBI double to left field, and then Turner drove in Little with a run-scoring single to cap the outburst.
Dufur went on to add two more runs apiece in the third and fourth innings.
Cole Parke slugged two doubles and drove in two runs, and both Trever Tibbets and Keyser tacked on a pair of RBIs.
“He hadn’t thrown more than two or three innings any time he has pitched, so he showed remarkable resilience out there on the mound today,” coach Little said. “He showed that he can go the distance if we need him to. I thought it was a nice performance by Bryson.”
Dufur (3-2 overall) played 6A South Eugene (2-2) today.
At 1 p.m. Saturday, the Rangers take on 2A Grant Union (2-1).
