Bailey Keever scored 23 points and Connor Uhalde followed up with 21, as the Dufur Rangers blew out Ione 63-33 in a Big Sky Conference boys’ basketball contest played at Dufur High School Saturday.
More impressive than the scoring output by the Ranger duo, the defense held Ione to 12 first-half points on three field goals to lead 46-12 at halftime.
“Defense led the way tonight,” said Dufur head coach Tony White. “We were able to make them very uncomfortable and not allow them to do anything on offense they wanted to in the first half. Second half, we got the young guys in for some valuable minutes.”
The Rangers have now won five of their last seven games to move into third place in the Big Sky.
Keever scored six points in the first quarter, but then exploded for 13 in the second quarter.
Uhalde started his big night in the first quarter with 12 points.
Kolbe Bales had eight points, Derek Frakes scored four points and the trio of Hagen Pence, Travis Lucas and Ethan Wetherbee tallied two points each.
For the Cardinals, Austin Carter had 11 points and Aaron Smythe added eight points.
Dufur (6-7 overall, 3-2 league) heads to Condon for a league game at 7:30 p.m. Friday. At 5:30 p.m., the team hosts Arlington.
Ione girls beat Dufur, 55-47
Alexus Outlaw and Emily DePriest rattled off 16 points each, but the Dufur Lady Rangers could not contain the offensive firepower of Jessie Flynn’s season-high 28, as the Cardinals came away with a 55-47 win Saturday in a league tilt played at Dufur High School.
“Although we lost tonight, we are making amazing progress each week,” said Dufur coach Jack Henderson. “Emily and Alexus both had 16 points tonight. Our entire team rebounded well against a team that dwarfed us in size. A great effort by the Lady Rangers.”
Ione led 18-7 through one quarter, but Outlaw scored seven of her points in the second quarter and Ione outscored Dufur 11-10 to lead 29-17 at the break.
DePriest had six points and Outlaw added five to lead a 15-13 third quarter run, and then the Rangers outscored Ione 13-12 in the final quarter for the final margin.
After Outlaw and DePriest, Sydney Reed scored six points, four in the fourth quarter, and Chloe Beeson tallied five points for the Rangers, who had 19 field goals and shot 6 of 13 from the line.
The Cardinals had 25 field goals and went 4 of 10 from the line, as Flynn was supported by Hannah Padberg, Morgan Orem and Rachel Holland’s six points apiece.
Dufur (2-11 overall, 1-4 league) heads to Condon-Wheeler at 6 p.m. on Friday.
