Faced with first-quarter foul troubles, Dufur head coach Tony White called upon Ethan Wetherbee, Tabor McLaughlin and Travis Lucas to shoulder some of the offensive and defensive load.
That trio came through with a combined 11 points to lead the Dufur Rangers to their fourth consecutive win, 55-40, over Arlington Saturday in a Big Sky boys’ basketball contest played at Dufur High School.
“We had three starters sitting three minutes into the second quarter,” White said. “Our reserves were huge off the bench tonight. They really stepped up big to preserve this victory. Good teams find a way to get it done and we did tonight.”
The Rangers connected on 20 field goals and shot 14 of 27 from the line, as Uhalde netted a team-high 23 points.
Keever had 15, Lucas was good for nine and Kolbe Bales added four points.
Shawn Hauner had 16 points and Anthony Valdez tallied nine for the Honkers, who had 14 field goals and went 9 of 18 from the line.
Dufur (8-7 overall, 5-2 league) travels to Mitchell for a league game at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Dufur girls stun Arlington, 41-40
Alexus Outlaw scored the eventual game-winning basket with less than 20 seconds to go and the Dufur Rangers hung on for a 41-40 victory over Arlington Saturday at Dufur High School.
At one point, Dufur had built an 11-point lead late in the game, but Arlington chipped away, getting to within a 39-37 deficit with 24 seconds remaining after a pair of free throws by Emily Kirby.
Following a timeout, Dufur faced full court pressure, but Chloe Beeson threw it over the top to Outlaw for the layup to give the Lady Rangers a 41-37 lead.
The Honkers made a last-second 3-pointer as time expired to cap the scoring.
“We had our best sustained effort of the season today,” said Dufur head coach Jack Henderson. “Alexus Outlaw led us in scoring with 18 points and filled in at point guard in Sydney's absence and did a great job in handling the ball. Emily DePriest scored 10 points and led us in rebounding with 14 boards.”
Arlington led 19-15 through the first quarter, but the Dufur defense held the Honkers to one second-quarter field goal and scored eight points of their own to take a 23-21 halftime lead.
Dufur then added an 8-4 third-quarter run on a 3-pointer by Outlaw, a basket by Kayla Bailey and a three points from DePriest.
All told, Dufur hit 16 field goals, four 3-pointers, and made 5 of 13 free throws.
Beeson and Bailey had six points each to round out the Ranger leaders.
Megan Hauner had 16 points and Joely Patnode had 14 for the Honkers, who had 15 field goals and went 5 for 5 from the line.
Dufur (3-12 overall, 2-5 league) is at Mitchell-Spray at 6 p.m. Friday, and then hosts South Wasco County at 4 p.m. Saturday.
