Before Saturday’s league tilt against Mitchell-Spray, South Wasco County head coach Jim Hull said he talked to his group about heading into districts on an upswing.
From the opening tip, Travis Hayes, Devan Dammann and Ellis Rager took it upon themselves to make sure to impose their will on the last-place Eagle-Loggers.
Hayes and Dammann combined for 25 points, Rager added 19 points and 15 rebounds, and Brody Myers went for eight points and 16 rebounds to lead the No. 6-ranked Redsides to a 62-43 win on senior night in Maupin.
“The way we dominated and did not give up any shots and the steals that we were getting off our press and the rebounding, we looked like a playoff team,” Hull said. “I challenged them to start out that way and they did. That was really good to see, especially dominating all phases of the game in that first quarter.”
In the opening stanza, SWC hit on 15 of 31 from the floor and posted runs of 19-2 and 15-12 to go out in front, 34-14 at the half.
When the third quarter buzzer went off, the Redsides finished a 16-11 run to go ahead 50-25 entering the final quarter.
The Redsides (20-4 overall, 11-3 league) play the winner of Wednesday’s district play-in game with Ione (4-18, 3-11) and Dufur (13-10, 10-4) on Friday.
Lady Redsides get past Mitchell
Abby Birman scored 13 points, and Chloe Huot tacked on eight to lead the South Wasco County Lady Redsides to their highest point total since Jan. 29 in a 46-30 romp over Mitchell-Spray Saturday in a league finale played in Maupin.
Ahead by a slim margin entering the fourth quarter, the Redsides used eight points from Huot and seven from Birman to lead a 25-10 fourth-quarter run to seal a win and snap a three-game losing streak.
“We played hard the whole game,” said SWC head hoops coach Bill Mead. “It was a great team effort. Our defense started wearing them out in the fourth quarter.”
SWC (11-12 overall, 6-8 league) heads to Hood River for a district play-in game at 6 p.m. tonight against Horizon Christian.
Dufur girls lose to Arlington
Down by a 32-27 margin heading into the final quarter, the Dufur Rangers were held without a field goal and went 2 for 4 from the line, as Arlington pulled away late with four field goals and 4 for 10 from the line in a 12-4 run to preserve a 44-29 win Saturday in Arlington.
The two teams scored eight points apiece in the first quarter, but then the Lady Rangers busted loose for five field goals, on a 3-pointer by Sydney Reed, a basket by Emily DePriest and Leticia Macias and five points from freshman sharpshooter Alexus Outlaw to go out in front, 23-20 at the half.
Dufur hit one basket and two free throws in the third quarter, while Arlington used seven points from Megan Hauner to turn the tide with a 12-4 run to make it a five-point Honker cushion entering the final period.
Hauner had 27 points on 11 field goals, Shelby Collins tacked on six and Joely Patnode added five points.
Dufur hit 10 field goals in all Saturday and went 6 of 11 from the line in the game, as both Outlaw and Reed combined for seven points.
DePriest, in her first game back from an ankle injury, totaled five points, and the duo of Macias and Chloe Beeson hit on four points each.
With the loss, Dufur (6-17 overall, 5-9 league) traveled to Arlington (16-9, 9-5) tonight as the No. 6 seed in the conference.
The winner of that contest faces Ione at 3 p.m. Friday for the start of district play in Madras.
