Sydney Reed busted loose for a season-high 18 points, but the Dufur Rangers could not convert on their final four opportunities to tie to take the lead in the final minute in a 45-43 loss to Horizon Christian Friday in a league tussle in Hood River.
“Sydney played great, probably her best game of the season,” said Dufur coach Jack Henderson. “She kept us going when we were struggling.”
Reed scored nine of her points in the first quarter to help give the Rangers a 15-7 lead through one quarter.
The Hawks (4-6 overall, 1-2 league) stormed back with a 20-14 second-quarter run to make it 29-27 halftime deficit, but then they added an 11-2 run in the third period to go ahead, 38-31.
In the fourth quarter, Alexus Outlaw, Reed, Chloe Beeson and Emily DePriest had a field goal apiece in a 12-7 output, but could not hit the crucial shots late in the game.
“We played well with the exception of the second quarter,” Henderson said. “We had opportunities to win the game, but still, it was a very good effort by our girls.”
DePriest had 11 points, Outlaw reeled off seven and Beeson tacked on six points for the Rangers (2-10, 1-3), who hit 14 field goals, four 3-pointers, and shot 11 of 23 from the free throw line.
Horizon made 18 field goals and shot 9 of 18 from the line, as Paulina Finn had 19 points, 14 in the first half.
Dufur plays at No. 7 Condon-Wheeler at 6 p.m. next Friday.
