The No. 11-ranked Dufur Rangers salvaged a split this past Friday and Saturday, with a big win over Arlington and a loss Saturday afternoon to No. 3 Country Christian in boys’ hoops play.
At home Friday, Caleb Morris had 17 points, four assists and four steals and Jake Kortge added 15 points to lead the Rangers to a 62-28 win over Big Sky Conference opponent Arlington.
What got the ball rolling in the right direction for Dufur was a pivotal 28-10 opening-quarter run.
Both teams scored 10 points each in the second period and the Rangers put the game out of reach in the third period with a 22-2 rally to run the count to 60-22.
“My boys came out and worked hard,” said Dufur coach Tony White. “(They) played well on defense and scored well. We had some good minutes from our young guys and rested the starters.”
Bailey Keever notched 13 points, four assists, eight rebounds and five steals, and Bryson Caldwell was good for nine points and seven rebounds for the Rangers, who hit 25 field goals and went 9 of 13 from the free throw line.
Coming off Friday’s performance, the Rangers had the tough task of trying to take care of the No. 3 team in the state Saturday in Molalla.
“This was a good basketball game,” White said. “Very intense game, with a playoff feel.”
Country Christian built a 12-point lead entering the fourth quarter and Dufur battled back to get it as close as five points in the final moments, but ended up a few plays short in a 47-38 loss to the Cougars.
“We had some opportunities to cut it even more, but just couldn’t capitalize,” coach White said. “Great game for my kids. I think we have seen some of the best teams in 1A this year. That experience will help us in preparation to finish our league season strong and carry us into the postseason.”
Country Christian led 13-12 through one quarter and came back from five points down in the second quarter to make it a 21-20 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Dufur struggled for a 1 for 12 shooting spree in the third frame, with Country Christian opening up its lead to 34-22 heading into the fourth quarter.
Morris scored 14 points, Kortge had six points and seven rebounds and Keever added 10 points, five assists and four rebounds for the Rangers, who hit 17 field goals, four from 3-point territory.
The Cougars (17-1 overall) hit on 22 field goals and went 2 for 4 from the free throw line.
Dufur (10-5, 6-1 league) hosts Mitchell-Spray at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
