Any parent who has imagined their child in a room full of color and imagination will find inspiration at Skip to my Room, a new children's furniture store downtown The Dalles.
“I wanted to create a job for myself that would keep my kids out of daycare,” says owner Elizabeth Traub, who first opened Skip to my Room in Lake Oswego in 1993. She had no experience in room design, but created a children's furniture shop full of color and imagination. It was featured in Better Homes and Gardens magazine, Kid's Room magazine, Portland Home and became a 10-year fixture of the Portland Street of Dreams.
She recently moved to The Dalles for the sunshine, and for a time Skip to my Room resided only in storage as she learned about the community and evaluated it's potential for a children's furniture store. “I had a lot of invitations to open in Hood River, but I've fallen in love with this community. It didn't make sense to drive to another community,” she explained. “I love the people, I love the sunshine, I love the small community and that wherever you are you are only 3 to 5 minutes away from the water. Anywhere you drive, you have these spectacular views.”
Her love of The Dalles came as something of a surprise for Traub. “I'm a city girl, I didn't know I had 'small community girl' in me.”
Traub is also a brand and marketing strategist working largely in social marketing, so was able to take her time deciding the future of her shop.
Eventually she decided to pull Skip to my Room out of storage and opened her doors downtown The Dalles with a shop at 413 E. 2nd Street. A soft opening in August set the stage, with an official Grand Opening Sept. 10.
She has a variety of products, with a full range of kids furniture and accessories, clothing, toy chests, and lots of gift items for kids.
“We have great demographic reach. This is a mom's store, a grandma's store, an aunt's store,” she said. And, yes, even a dad's store.
Unlike many stores that feature hand-crafted work, none of the items for sale are consignment. “If we like it, we buy it outright,” she explained.
Every third Saturday, Skip to my Room features a Crafter's Open, in which crafters are invited to set up tables in the shop to market their wares.
“I invite a dozen local moms or dads who design and make crafts. They do some amazing things,” she explained.
Most of them have products in the store, so clients are able to meet the crafters they admire.
A mother of five children ages 8 to 26, three of whom live at home, Traub is well versed in the world of kids, and kids furniture, and hopes to bring her past success to her new home on the sunny side of the mountains.
