The Sherman County School Board voted Monday, Dec. 8, to consolidate the educational program into a single K-12 campus.
The district currently consists of two school: Sherman Elementary in Grass Valley and Sherman Junior and Senior High School in Moro.
To facilitate the campus consolidation, the district has entered into a contract with BBT Architects for design services.
Those actions came after nearly three years of planning, which has included feedback from staff, parents, and school community members and extensive evaluations of cost savings and student benefits.
“Our priority is, and will remain, what is best for our students. This decision will create a facility that will provide all Sherman County students with a safe place to receive the quality, 21st century education that they need to succeed in the classroom,” said Bill Martin, chair of the school board.
“I want to thank each member of all of the various committees and my fellow board members for their tireless efforts over the past several years that have brought us to this decision.”
Work will now begin for the board-appointed Architectural design committee members.
This group of 13 individuals includes board members, school staff, parents, and community members.
Owner Representative Mike Marino and BBT Architects will lead the group in the process to design a new addition and undertake a minor remodel.
The project is scheduled for completion by September 2016.
Some of the major priorities and logistics the committee will consider are student safety, separation of students, improved food service facility, and creative space planning for teaching.
“I am confident that our final plan will benefit Sherman County students for generations to come,” said Kyle Blagg, a board member.
