YouthThink is sponsoring “An Evening with Dr. Ann Corwin,” known as the parenting doctor, on Thursday, Feb. 19 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Columbia Gorge Community College, Building 2, in the lecture hall.
Corwin is the co-developer of an emotional literacy project for children called “Pocket Full of Feelings.”
The event that is free and open to the public will offer positive and practical information about emotional literacy; a key element in mental health, academic achievement and overall well-being for children and adults. Corwin will include a short question and answer session for community members in attendance.
“Dr. Corwin is back by popular demand”, said Debby Jones, coordinator of YouthThink, a nonprofit group that promotes healthy lifestyles for children and teens.
“The emotional literacy or social emotional learning that she teaches is giving children, as well as adults, the ability to understand emotions and the behaviors that follow. Emotional literacy is an important prevention tool and that’s why YouthThink has become the pilot community for Pocket Full of Feelings.
“When parents and educators understand the A, B, C’s of social emotional learning they are more equipped to help deal and prevent problems such as; drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, dysfunctional relationships and much more. It can’t happen overnight, but many in our area are experiencing positive results and are very encouraged by the changes they see in their children.”
Corwin and her associates have been partnering with parents to assist them in understanding that feelings drive the behavior they see in their children.
Realizing that behaviors are expressions of feelings, they have developed a tool kit to help parents learn specific ways to teach their children how to deal with the way they feel in order to transform their behavior in healthy ways.
