Officials warn about Mill Creek flood risk

A YOUNG couple walks south on Mill Creek, north of the Sixth Street bridge. The area was once a trailer park that was destroyed during a major flood in 1996. Fires this summer burned large areas of the creek's drainage at a higher elevation, making the ground subject to oversaturation. City and county officials are warning residents about the potential risk of flooding along the creek.

Floods are the most common and costly natural hazard in the nation, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
