Former Sherman County Sheriff’s Deputy Geremy Shull entered into a diversion agreement on two counts of hit and run stemming from a Feb. 1 crash in The Dalles.
Dismissed was a count of reckless driving.
On July 2, he entered into a DA diversion on the two counts, which calls for 40 hours of community service work, no contact with the victims, attending a victim impact panel, paying restitution, undergoing evaluation for substance abuse and following through with any recommended treatment. He also may not possess or consume intoxicants.
The diversion carries a six-month term, and if he completes it successfully, the charges will be dropped, said Wasco County District Attorney Eric Nisley.
Nisley said, “This case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Sarah Carpenter. She treated Mr. Shull the same way she treats anyone else in a similar circumstance. He did not receive special treatment because he was a law enforcement officer. She looked at his lack of criminal history, his willingness to accept responsibility, to pay restitution, and resolved the case in a fair, conscientious manner.”
A caller last February reported to police that a vehicle hit the concrete wall in the 600 block of East Fourth Street and drove off.
Police later found the vehicle near east Ninth and J streets. Shull was found intoxicated and passed out in the back seat.
Shull told the Chronicle in February that he was human, and had been dealing with “a huge amount of toxic stress over the past 15 years and an overwhelming amount in the past six months.”
To cope with that overwhelming personal stress, he said he unintentionally mixed prescription medication with alcohol.
“I unfortunately don’t remember the events of the night, but I own it,” he said.
Shull resigned shortly after the incident.
