My dad saved up enough for his first camera, probably sometime in the early 1970s, and walked the woods behind his parent’s house in what’s now a suburb of Portland. Pine squirrels, herons, various elusive birds: He had a lot of potential subjects, but most of them were very, very camera shy.

A woodpecker works to excavate a potential nest hole in an oak tree on a ridge west of The Dalles, hammering free chips of wood and discarding them. Although only February, the bird appeared to be well along in the process, only its rump and tail showing as it worked loose new chips from inside the hole.

Habitats in Sierras and Oregon Cascades could be protected GRANTS PASS — A woodpecker that depends on intense wildfires for the standing dead trees where it feeds on insects is being considered for protection under the Endangered Species Act. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Monday it will take a closer look at the black-backed woodpecker. A decision is due in a year but could take longer due to budget cuts.
