Steller sea lion consumption of spawning salmon and steelhead in the waters below the lower Columbia River’s Bonneville Dam continued its upward trend during the late winter-spring of 2013, according to a year-end report prepared by a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers research team.

Summer Chinook fishing is fair below Bonneville Dam. Shad continue to cross Bonneville Dam in large numbers; however, catch rates appear to be winding down. Summer steelhead abundance is increasing in the lower Columbia. Sturgeon retention is open from The Dalles Dam upstream to the Oregon/Washington border. Catch and release angling for sturgeon is good in the estuary and fair to good from Marker 82 downstream to Longview. Walleye angling is fair to good in the The Dalles and John Day pools.

CLACKAMAS, Ore. – Two Columbia River white sturgeon fisheries will close earlier than expected under rules adopted today by fishery managers from Oregon and Washington. The summer sturgeon retention season from Bonneville Dam upstream to The Dalles Dam was reduced by one day to Friday, June 21 only. Previously, this fishery was scheduled to be open June 22 as well but that day was eliminated from the season. Sturgeon retention will close effective Friday, June 21 from the Wauna power lines downstream 40 miles to the river mouth at Buoy 10, including Youngs Bay and all adjacent Washington tributaries. This season was originally scheduled to continue through June 30.
Weekend Fishing Opportunities: Effective Saturday May 25 through June 15 spring chinook fishing is open from the Tongue Point/Rocky Point line upstream to Beacon Rock, plus the banks only from Beacon Rock to Bonneville Dam. Shad fishing is open from Buoy 10 upstream to the Oregon/Washington border above McNary Dam. Sturgeon fishing is good from Portland to Longview and is beginning to pick up in Astoria as the population migrates from the Willamette down to the estuary. The estuary sturgeon season is open seven days per week during Saturday May 11 through Sunday, June 30 (or catch guideline) below the Wauna Powerlines. Walleye angling is excellent in the The Dalles pool.
