With a golden opportunity to vault into second place in the Columbia River Conference standings, The Dalles Riverhawks used a pitching gem by Jordan Wetmore in a 10-0 mercy-ruled win, and then Spencer Honald laid a suicide squeeze bunt to plate Tyler Westin to give the team a 4-3 victory and a two-game baseball sweep Saturday at Bob Williams Field.
HOOD RIVER – The Dalles led 5-0 through the first two innings, but Prairie, Wash. battled back to tie the score at 5-all on a squeeze bunt in the sixth, setting up a walk-off situation for senior infielder Tyler Westin in the home half of the seventh.
While the offense continued its torrid pace Thursday against 6A Forest Grove, two bad innings turned a 5-0 lead into a 10-5 deficit in what was a 10-8 loss at Quinton Street Ballpark.
Bend rallied from a 9-5 deficit in the seventh inning with three runs and had the tying run at second base and one out with second-team Intermountain Conference catcher Cole Frey at the plate.
The Dalles baseball team totaled nine hits and had six batters reach on walks, but stranded 11 runners, including the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning in a 4-3 road loss to Sandy Tuesday at Sandy High School.
Dawson Hoffman and Johnny Miller combined for seven RBIs, and both Dalles Seufalemua and Jose Gonzalez scored three runs apiece, as The Dalles Riverhawks won their first game of the season by a 13-8 margin over 6A Reynolds Tuesday in a non-league baseball game played at Quinton Street Ballpark.
After a decade-long departure from the game, Hall of Fame baseball coach Steve Sugg is back. His return has the community of The Dalles abuzz and that energy helped draw nearly 60 players for tryouts.
