From where The Dalles Cross Country program was four years ago, there wasn’t an expectation of running under 16 minutes, trying to break school records or to be one of the best runners or teams in the state — It was just, ‘let’s just try to do good at districts.’

While The Dalles cross country roster has some turnover from last season with 15 graduated seniors no longer on the team, there is plenty of firepower ready to unleash on the 5A classification this fall. Just two days from their season-opening race in Tualatin on Saturday, head coach Bob Thouvenel has seen the program bolster its numbers to 55, 12 of them seniors and 32 underclassmen.

The Dalles freshman Tressa Wood placed eighth in the 3,000 meters this morning with a personal-record time of 11 minutes and 15.63 seconds at the 5A OSAA State Track and Field Championship in Eugene, improving on her old PR set at districts last week in Hermiston (11:23.34).

Molly Nelson is taking one final bus ride as a Riverhawk. Nelson is headed to state in Eugene as part of the 4x400-meter relay squad, and she is joined by teammates Shyanne Cady, Elizabeth Tapia, Tressa Wood, Jenna Miller, Emma Mullins, Justin Conklin, Julian Hernandez and Cameron Perez for action on Friday and Saturday at Historic Hayward Field.

The Dalles cross country athletes (pictured from left to right) Cory Cameron and Molly Nelson show off their Most Inspirational plaques made by assistant coach Robert Clark, with the help of the welding class and the woodshop teacher, Wednesday at The Dalles Middle School. Emma Mullins and Ezekiel Stelzer were awarded Most Outstanding as runners, and the trio of Tressa Wood, Ethan Shubert and David Wring won Most Improved. Mullins and Stelzer won first-team All-Columbia River Conference honors, and Wood, John Miller, Jony Nelson and Luke McLean had their names called for the second team.

On a rainy day in Eugene, The Dalles cross country teams each came through with top-10 performances, with the boys putting forth six times of less than 18 minutes for a sixth-place tie at the OSAA/U.S. Bank/Les Schwab Tires 5A State Cross Country Meet at Lane Community College.
