A rebuilding year for the HRV track and field team has given Head Coach Brandon Bertram plenty of optimism for the 2018 season, as his athletes — some veteran, some brand-new to the sport — wowed him at OSAA 5A state meet held Friday and Saturday at University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene.
They’ve won two state titles in as many years and haven’t lost a game since 2013, but this year’s HRV boys soccer team isn’t taking anything for granted as they aim for a third-straight 5A championship.
HRV (10-0-2, 4-0 league) swept the first round of Columbia River Conference play earlier this week shutting out its third league opponent in a row, The Dalles Riverhawks (2-10, 1-3 league), by a score of 7-0. It was the Eagles’ fifth consecutive shutout this season (eighth overall).
On paper, it looked like No. 1 HRV (8-0-2, 2-0 league) would have a tough matchup with No. 3 Hermiston on Tuesday, with the Bulldogs carrying a 7-1-1 record and a 1-0 league record to go along with the team’s top-three ranking.
In a thrilling end to a perfect season, the Hood River Valley High School varsity boys soccer team defeated Woodburn 2-0 Saturday to claim the 2014 OSAA 5A state championship and finish the season with an unblemished 18-0 record.
The BSC Strikers U14 boys soccer team was in North Carolina last weekend, where they represented Hood River at the 2014 National Premier League Tournament.
