Conservative estimates put 15,000 cruise- ship tourists on the streets of The Dalles in 2019, according to The Dalles Mainstreet Program.

Contractors and tourists in The Dalles are taking any bed they can find as home owners see an opportunity to capture revenue through renting rooms.

Strong cruise season expected

Passengers from the American Empress sternwheeler are greeted as they arrive in The Dalles Tuesday afternoon. It was the first docking of the tourist season and three cruise ships are scheduled to arrive in The Dalles each week until late November. A representative from The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce and Fort Dalles Floozies greet each vessel and passengers and crew are given information about things to do in the area and places to see.

I have been saying for some time that I believe The Dalles is at a “Tipping Point.” Welcome to 2014, a year in which many good things will happen. Because I am optimistic about the immediate future, I will be filing this summer for a second term as your mayor. Elections will occur November 2014.
