If it were on an episode of “Antiques Roadshow,” a French doll and her clothing, newly on display at the Discovery Center, would definitely be a “find.” The doll, dating from about the 1850s, has exquisite hand-made finery, which sparked the concept of children’s “fashion in Paris,” a doll appraiser told the museum.
Local historian and employee of the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum Susan Buce will present the Feb. 3 Regional History Forum program at the Original Wasco County Courthouse. She will present “Airmail Beacons of the Columbia River Gorge” at the 1859 venue, 410 W. Second Place, The Dalles.
A flood of contributions, dwarfing last year’s effort, has come to the Discovery Center for its second annual donation drive to benefit the Lone Pine Native American fishing village. The collection is still underway through Christmas — items can be taken to the museum, at 5000 Discovery Drive — but the needed items aren’t the typical holiday requests.
The Dalles City Council held a special work session Monday to gather public input about whether the funding formula for lodging taxes should be changed, or if the current dispersal adequately supported tourism and marketing activities. “We decided it was a good time to look toward the future,” said Mayor Steve Lawrence.
With no professional rodeo on the horizon for 2016, the Fort Dalles Days Steering Committee has decided to temporarily discontinue activities built around that event. “We just decided as a group that it would be best to go on a hiatus,” said Susan Buce, a member of the committee.

Tupper is one of the featured musicians for the museum’s annual Holiday Open House, Saturday, December 5 from 12 to 5 p.m. Tupper obtained the massive 800 pound pipe organ from Ogden Music in Portland. The Johannus brand organ was manufactured in Denmark, and the keys are made from Indian Rosewood and European Boxwood.
