That there is a childcare crisis in the Gorge will come as no surprise to parents and guardians searching for placement options.
According to a study published by Oregon State University titled “Oregon’s Child Care Deserts: Mapping Supply by Age Group, Metropolitan Status, and Percentage of Publicly Funded Slots,” all families with infants and toddlers struggle to find childcare placement, as do most families with children under the age of 5.
Providence Senior Village has resumed its Sunshine Club Adult Day Respite service on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Starting May 1, Wednesdays will be added.

Corrections The Sunday, March 16, the editorial incorrectly stated that attorneys from any of the counties in Oregon’s seventh judicial district can run to fill the slot being vacated by retiring Judge Paul Crowley of Hood River. In fact, ORS 3.041, Subsection 3, specifically excludes Wasco County attorneys. It specifies that two of the judges shall be residents or have principal offices in Wasco County and two in Hood River County. Attorneys from Gilliam, Sherman and Wheeler counties can run for any of the seats. The March 16 story, “Program aims to improve workforce readiness,” incorrectly stated that National Career Readiness Certificate assessments are being given to juniors and seniors at The Dalles High School.
