Turnout is at 23.5 percent as of Friday morning in the May 15 Primary Election. That’s 3,341 ballots out of the 14,207 issued. The deadline is 8 p.m. on May 15 to submit ballots in the wide-ranging Primary Election.

Wasco County Clerk Lisa Gambee, who oversees the local elections process, is getting a lot of phone calls that reflect confusion about the difference between an “unaffiliated” or “Independent” voter. She said the calls began after the Oregon Capital Bureau reported that the Independent Party of Oregon (IPO) had opened its primary to unaffiliated voters.

To the editor: Waiting for take-out at KFC, I chatted with a gentleman who had a prosthetic device as a right arm and an empty sleeve instead of a left arm. He told me when I asked that he had lost the limbs in 1968 during the Vietnam War. I told him that my husband fought I Korea and a brother in Iwo Jima, and said, “But they were luckier than you.” He said, Oh, I was lucky.”
