An inaugural event to provide services to the homeless drew about 100 people Jan. 30, far exceeding the organizers’ expectations. Called the “Community Connection,” the event was created by The Dalles Housing Solutions Coalition to not only reach the homeless, but those who can help the homeless.
The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department welcomes beginning campers to join an overnight guided camping experience this summer at state parks. For $30 per family, the parks district provides tents, sleeping bags and other gear. Volunteers will help out.
BEND (AP) — The sounds of cars buzzing down U.S. Highway 97 echo inside Ron Moore's tent, where he sits on an army cot covered with a University of Oregon comforter. It's about 60 degrees inside the three-person tent, which is insulated by five layers of tarps and heavyweight blankets. But outside, the ground is blanketed by two feet of snow and the temperature hovers just above freezing.

The thermometer had topped out at 112 degrees that afternoon and it was still in the mid 90’s even though it was 9:30 at night. We couldn’t sleep so we watched stars, told stories, and made plans to be at the Nat before it even opened so we could be the first ones in the pool.
