A local group that hosts events to bring services to the homeless is moving its third such event, on Thursday, Jan. 30, to the Civic Auditorium, providing much more room and more privacy for medical services.

A group that formed last year to tackle issues facing the homeless is planning an event in late January to provide a range of services for them, including veterinarian care for their pets. Called “The Community Connection,” the day-long event is slated for Wednesday, Jan. 30, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the basement of the Mid-Columbia Senior Center, 1112 W. 9th St., The Dalles.

The Columbia Gorge Food Bank, a transitional program of the Oregon Food Bank, will soon open in The Dalles to provide supplies for communities in Wasco, Hood River and Sherman counties. The Oregon Food Bank began to serve these communities two years ago, when local need surpassed what the Mid-Columbia Community Action Council could handle.

The Windy River Gleaners has been struggling to keep enough food on the shelves to help community members in need. Bad weather has halted food deliveries, forcing the organization to curtail office hours and pare back volunteer-led fundraising activities.

A new Oregon Food Bank truck will be dedicated at a ceremony Thursday that will also celebrate the expanded ability of local hunger relief agencies to distribute fresh produce, food boxes, meals, backpacks and supplemental products to needy families. “This truck was purchased specifically to serve the region,” said Sharon Thornberry, OFB’s rural community liaison.
