The Next Door will hold its annual Stories of Hope Breakfast fundraiser at the Columbia Gorge Hotel on Friday, Sept. 14, from 8-9 a.m. The breakfast is free to attend, but space is limited to 120 people, so those wanting a spot are encouraged to reserve it quickly.

Auditions for Columbia Center for the Arts’ holiday play, “Merry Christmas, Strega Nona,” by Tomie de Paola, will be held at the center, 215 Cascade Ave., on Friday, Sept. 22 from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Schools are preparing for big changes in 2014-15. In a meeting that was part summer wrap-up and part fall preview the Board of Directors of Hood River County School District conducted a wide variety of business Wednesday, including news on how two statewide assessment and reporting programs will affect local schools.
