Four local business and community leaders have been elected to the board of trustees of Mid-Columbia Medical Center (MCMC). Janet Hamada, Bill Ketchum, Michele Spatz and Robb Van Cleave joined the governing board of the nationally-recognized hospital, which provides a wide array of healthcare services to residents of The Dalles and surrounding communities of the Columbia River Gorge.
At one location, two couches and a battered barbecue were sitting by the side of the gravel road. At another, ragged outdoor carpet covered a property dotted with junk and tall vegetation. A third had a dilapidated and dangerously leaning outbuilding that was a threat to human safety. Those are the kinds of public eyesores that The Dalles Codes Enforcement Officer Nikki Lesich works to eradicate.

Citing a $2 million budget deficit, the president of Columbia Gorge Community College on Tuesday recommended to the College board that it close the Indian Creek Campus temporarily in mid-2015. CGCC president Dr. Frank Toda has suggested a three-part restructuring plan involving an undetermined number of layoffs and program cuts.
To the editor: Back in 1999, I discovered my parent’s sewer bill (inside city limits) was $17.25 while mine (outside city limits) was $29.25. I called City of The Dalles to find out why. I was told that since I don’t pay city taxes, I would have to make up for it by paying more on the sewer bill. This has continued for years with ever increasing hikes.
