The downpour of rain in Hood River last Friday would try to spoil a special night at Hood River Valley High School, but the combination of the grand opening of Henderson Stadium, the kick-off to Hall of Fame weekend and a Hood River Valley football victory made for a memorable evening.

Putnam senior Makenzie Maier will go down as the thorn in the Eagles’ side this season. The senior forward scored twice in her team’s 3-1 win over HRV at the beginning of the season and twice more Saturday night, in the 5A varsity girls soccer quarterfinals, to seal the win for the No. 1 ranked Kingsmen and knock the Eagles out of the state bracket.
Hood River Valley High School varsity girls soccer hosted Rex Putnam Tuesday evening in the team’s season-opener. The 3-1 loss against the Kingsmen was a tough way to start their schedule; but the girls found some strong points to build on and the game will serve as a gauge of progress for the rest of the season.
