Law enforcement officers face potentially deadly challenges every day they are on the job. There is no such thing as “routine” in police work, and being prepared for the unexpected is standard operating procedure. Yet what former Wasco County Sheriff Art Labrousse encountered was truly unique, and there was no way to prepare for the bizarre situation he found himself having to contend with. Just three years before Labrousse was elected sheriff, Oregon had been invaded — literally — by members of a religious sect known as the Rajneeshees.
