BINGEN — Big Britches Productions has received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and will begin full nonprofit operation on April 1. The community theater company operates at the Bingen Theater, presenting five productions annually and drawing audiences from Trout Lake to Parkdale, The Dalles to Stevenson.

To the editor: In a December 27 New York Times article titled ‘The Fear Economy,” economist/columnist Paul Krugman discussed why corporate profits in 2013 soared to record highs, relative to GDP, despite lingering unemployment and weak economic growth. It was a wonderful insight into the workings of the labor market - and how conflicts of interest between wages and profits can play themselves out.

What profits man? To the editor: (Edited for length.) The dumbest thing I ever read was a bumper sticker that said: “The person who dies with the most toys wins.” And here is the smartest thing: “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if each of us could have everything we could possibly want. Why? Because then we could discover that owning everything isn’t nearly enough to truly satisfy us for long and we are left still wanting!” Why?
