Sherman County Sheriff Brad Lohrey, the overseeing sheriff for the regional jail, is a planner. He likes to anticipate what might be needed 5 to 10 years from now. At his behest, the Northern Oregon Regional Corrections Facility (NORCOR) board created a dedicated reserve fund Feb. 28 that would be used as a savings account for things like a new roof, new cameras and new heat pumps.
Wasco County Commissioner Rod Runyon questioned Hood River County’s ability to decline paying for the juvenile detention facility, saying that was a decision for the regional jail board, not the county. Runyon said a headline in a March 20 Chronicle article, “HR County may ditch juvenile jail,” was a misnomer.
Some jail board members don’t want another four-county vote on a permanent tax rate to help fund the jail, and other members questioned whether housing immigration detainees was worth it given the controversy it has drawn.
Officials hope the just-opened Community School, a year-round alternative school at the Wahtonka campus, eases problems neighbors near the high school have with young people hanging out in front of their homes all day.
The Dalles High School band traveled to Disneyland on April 28 for a five-day stay, courtesy of the band’s recently reinvigorated booster organization, made up of parents and interested community members alike.
