The Horizon Hawks bounced back from a 5-3 first game loss with a 10-1 slugfest to split a home doubleheader against Western Mennonite of Salem Saturday at Collins Field. Playing in glorious spring conditions, the Hawks, now 2-1 in their nonleague schedule, managed five hits but left seven on base and suffered the fate of a couple badly timed errors in the first of the two games. The score was tied 3-3 going into the seventh, when Horizon allowed two runs to give the visiting Pioneers the win.
Religious connotations seem appropriate for a basketball game featuring two Christian schools, an “Ark” and a pre-game prayer circle with both teams holding hands. For good measure, each roster had a Luke, one had a Matthew and there’s no doubt Mark and John were represented somewhere in the sweltering Baker City High gymnasium Saturday night.
BAKER CITY – Top-ranked Horizon Christian School shook off some first-quarter cobwebs Thursday and methodically dismantled third-ranked Imbler 67-47 in the opening round of the Class 1A state basketball tournament at Baker City High School.
Facing Big Sky Conference opponents has meant one thing for the Horizon Hawks boys basketball team this season — another one-sided win to add to their season stat sheet. But that’s a detail Horizon coaches Darrin Lingel, Mike Totaro and their powerhouse squad isn’t focusing on.
Horizon Christian’s doubleheader baseball sweep Saturday against visiting Irrigon featured timely hitting, clutch pitching, small ball, long ball and web gems. It also included seven Hawk errors in the opening game and a number of baserunning miscues throughout both contests.
